Custom WW2 German WSS M40 Helmet with Helmet Covers
(Oak Leaf Summer Pattern)

I’m really happy with this custom. I have always wanted improve helmet with covers without the fabric looking too thick and distorting the shape of the helmet. Here’s the best way I figured :)

The cover is a reworked DML’s Oak Leaf (Summer) Pattern cover and the core helmet is a DML’s M40 helmet.

Improvements – this is kinda a long process. Firstly I removed the stitching around the rims of the covers, removed the hook covers and also the hook. Next I stained the fabric with oil paint – raw umber and burnt umber. Once dried, I spray on a thick layer of hair spray. Next I did some light sanding before I attached the covers to the helmet. The covers were neatly glued at the rim with the excess fabric tucked in. Next I fabricated hooks using pins to be attached a the 3 locations at the helmet rim. Lastly I created the strap. Sounds like a lot of work eh? It is … :P

I am working on some other pattern of covers – I shall share later.

Cheers!
